Connecticut Coalition Success: Southington STEPS

Southington’s Town-wide Efforts to Promote Success (STEPS) coalition is considered a model coalition by many in Connecticut.  STEPS grew from a small group of concerned citizens discussing youth suicides in town to a vibrant coalition which has developed innovative approaches to reduce substance use and promote youth developmental assets.

STEPS has multiple elements identified in coalition research which has contributed to its success:

  • Two respected town leaders, the Youth Services and YMCA executive directors, served as its first coalition co-chairs.  They recruited other members and organizational partners.

  • The coalition surveyed students throughout its 15 years to evaluate its works and to advocate for continued funding.

  • Commitment to fund a part-time coordinator, who is now funded full-time.

  • Diversified its funding to include a 10-year Drug Free Community grant, current DMHAS PCC grant, local foundation funding, and contributions from local organizations.

  • A leadership succession plan in which coalition officers advance to a new position each year.

  • Focus on developmental assets as well as substance misuse prevention.  STEPS prioritizes specific development assets each year based on survey results.

  • A vibrant youth council with four committees which implement their own prevention initiatives aligned with the coalition’s strategic plan.

  • Engaging community partners in implementation of prevention initiatives and playing a supportive role as partners take ownership.

  • Fostering a team spirit among coalition members through frequent fun activities which illustrate prevention concepts and strategies.
